2/17/2024 0 Comments Myst masterpiece edition box art![]() But sadly there still is lots of game-devs who are still living in Win98 era, which is why you may find even such relics as "save" and "cache" located in game folder under C:\Program Files. Like, don't delete/modify anything without knowing what you're doing - cache-files, or basically anything that is subject to change without update/patch should not be located there. Just remember to be careful when you're dealing with the actual game-files, as too careless behavior will lead to reinstall. At this point I currently cannot provide screenshots nor correct file-name, as my desktop-PC is out of order (GPU fan broke, waiting for replacement part to arrive). Then you find the correct exe, select it (that's important, because right-clicking without selecting first will give you a menu with options for the current folder) and right-click it, and choose Properties. Click button "BROWSE LOCAL FILES." - this will open a new window in filemanager. From the window " - Properties", select LOCAL FILES tab. From resulting menu, select Properties. In Steam, in Library-view, right-click the game. How to change compatibility settingsFirst, you need to locate the game executable (.exe). Took something like 7 hours ( including time for playing mobile-game while sitting in toilet).Īfter finishing the game, I opened compatibility-settings again, and turned on option "Disable visual themes", and tested the game. No problems, I played the whole game in one instance. This is where I got an error-dialog, instead of save-dialog. I had played for quite a bit, when I realized that I had not done a single save. Right click and select 'Modify.' Append DISABLETHEMES DISABLEDWM to the entry and click OK. Open regedit and go to HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Layers and find your Myst Masterpiece key. As last option, Windows 95 mode proved to be working, although sounds played distorted. Select Reduced Color Mode and choose 8-bit. Eventually, even Windows 98 mode was out of the window. With this knowledge, it was easy for me to go through the compatibility modes and see which ones would be working completely. On the Myst isle, in the room where you set the voltage, moving pointer over the red buttons caused the game to halt. It was not even related to movie-animation. I played a little while, until I found a spot where I could repeatedly cause the game to hang. Movies worked fine, sounds played great, everything seemed to work just good. Then I switched compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3. With quick test, movies started working, but sounds played rather distorted. I played through Selenitic Age.Īfter returning with a page and seeing only black box on a book, I decided to try to get the movies working as well, thus I changed compatibility mode to Windows 98. Mysterious locations, mysterious music in mysterious worlds. Experience the original Myst with better prerendered graphics. Other than that, there were no crashes, I was able to save the game, sounds played out great. Every scrap of paper and ambient sound may provide the vital clues which allow hidden secrets to unravel a part of the mystery and lead you one step closer to reversing a wrong that has gone unchecked for ages. URU lore builds into it.Full detail about how I ended up to these settingsAt first I launched the game without changing anything, and it worked all fine, with one exception - no movies, including movie-based animations (blue and red books were "dead", holo-pool had no animation, etc). It does not work well as a game in the main series but if you treat it as an expansion of URU, although not fantastic, it is decent. Watson, Myst V was originally going to be an expansion for URU before Ubisoft pulled the plug, and instead had it turned into the last game in the main series. Myst V although you don't get details in the game you are no longer playing as the stranger but as character you read about in URU named Dr. It is not really part of the main series but a spinoff. In URU you create an avatar, it was originally built as an MMO version of Myst, (it is semi-controversial for that reason but I personally love it). Notes up to URU and Myst V you will have played as the stranger, the idea of the stranger is that it is not a video game character but you that have been transported to these worlds. I would suggest playing both before playing Riven.įrom there Riven, Exile, Revelation, the main quest in URU and to D'ni expansion in URU, and then Myst V. I personally prefer the original slideshow format of the original but a newer play might like the realtime better. The first game to play is the first Myst, Myst Masterpiece Edition is the original, realMyst Masterpiece Edition is a faithful remake of the original in reatime 3d. For those three they have settings in which you can easily change the resolution to match what your computer is set to. All the games except for realMyst, Myst V, and URU are all pre-rendered with one resolution.
